Gu Gyo-Dong

In 1991 Gu Gyo-Dong was selected for the South Korean national fencing team whilst studying at the Korea National Sport University, competing at his first international event later that same year. One year later Gu competed in the team épée event at the Barcelona Olympics, losing his two individual bouts, with South Korea placing 10th overall.

Gu had his breakthrough year in 1994, winning bronze in the team épée event at both the Asian Games in Hiroshima and the World Fencing Championships in Athina. He had further success in the team event, repeating his bronze at the Asian Games and World Championships in 2002. After his retirement Gu worked as the head coach of the national men’s team, winning bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Four years later he was the head coach of the women’s team at the Paris Olympics, where they placed fifth in the team event.
