George McLoughlin was one of the two members selected for the 1948 Irish Olympic basketball team that were not members of the military, along with Harry Boland. He previously played for Hibernians in Dublin and was the tallest member selected for the Olympic team, standing at 6’2 (188 cm), but ultimately did not play in the Olympic tournament. He was killed when his vehicle collided with a lorry in Shankill, County Dublin in 1955, at the age of 28. McLoughlin’s father, George, had previously served as a president of the Amateur Basketball Association of Ireland (ABAI).
