John Ely was on the fencing jury at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics. He graduated from Columbia University in New York in 1926 and then earned an LL.B. degree from Columbia. As an undergraduate he was on their fencing and chess teams. Ely moved to Los Angeles and was a law professor at Loyola Marymount University from 1938-58.
