The third son of a Peruvian of diplomat, Gonzalo de Candamo graduated from the Janson-de-Sailly high school in Paris. In the late 1890s Candamo was a member of the Societe sportive de L’Ile de Puteaux, where he played tennis. At the 1900 Paris Olympics four tennis events were contested for medals along with other non-medal handicap events. Candamo competed in a doubles handicap event along with Frenchman Guy de la Chapelle, with the pair reaching the semi-finals. Gonzalo’s older brother Carlos was the first athlete to represent Peru at the Olympics, competing in the foil and épée at the 1900 Paris Games.
