At the 1900 Paris Olympics four tennis events were contested for medals along with other non-medal handicap events. Candamo competed in a doubles handicap event along with Frenchman Guy de la Chapelle, with the pair reaching the semi-finals. Gonzalo’s older brother Carlos was the first athlete to represent Peru at the Olympics, competing in the foil and épée at the 1900 Paris Games.
