Pavel Filatov was a professional military officer and served as an artillery colonel. He joined the Red Army after the revolution and was promoted to Kombrig (brigade commander) in 1938. At the 1912 Olympic Games, he competed in the individual sabre event and was eliminated after losing all three of his bouts in round one.
