Born in Moskva in 1927 Leonid Bogdanov fought for the Soviet Union in World War II, which saw him honoured in the Victory Parade of 1945. After the war Bogdanov became a skilled sabre fencer and competed at international tournaments in the 1950s. At the 1955 World Championships in Roma he won bronze as part of the Soviet team. His performance earned him a place on the Olympic team for the 1956 Melbourne Games where he won another team bronze.
