Thomas Balla was born in Budapest but emigrated to the United States in 1956 after the Hungarian October Revolution. He fenced sabre for Salle Csiszar in Philadelphia, winning Amateur Fencers League of America (AFLA) titles in team sabre with them in 1964 and 1971. Balla attended the University of Pennsylvania, graduating with an engineering degree in 1961.
