Born in Kansas, Harold Corbin moved to California with his family when he was 17-years-old. Corbin started college on scholarship at Cal Tech but later transferred to UCLA for financial reasons. He started fencing at UCLA and made the 1932 Olympic team. Corbin later served in the Navy in World War II and continued competing as a fencer until he left for service in the Korean War. Corbin had a degree in mathematics from UCLA and worked as a teacher in between his military stints, at North Hollywood High School, Immaculate Heart College and Los Angeles City College.
