Hal Goldsmith was born in Germany as Hans Goldschmidt, but came to American in June 1938 aboard the SS Washington with his family. He later attended Stuyvesant High School and City College of New York, where he won the 1952 NCAA foil championship. Goldsmith competed for the Fencers Club of New York, helping them win Amateur Fencers League of America (AFLA) team foil titles in 1955, 1957-58, and 1962-63; and a team 3-weapon title in 1955. He competed at the 1952, 1956, and 1960 Olympics, competing individually only in 1956. Goldsmith won individual foil gold medals at the 1955 and 1959 Pan American Games, adding a 1959 team foil gold, and Pan Am silver medals in 1955 in both team foil and team épée. His career was in insurance, with most of it spent at Frenkel and Company, international insurance brokers.
