Byron Krieger attended Wayne State University, where he won the 1942 Intercollegiate Fencing Association (IFA) championship in 1942. He represented Salle Tuscan, but in 1957, competing for a combined Michigan team, Krieger helped them win the Amateur Fencers League of America (AFLA) team 3-weapon title. At the 1951 Pan American Games, he won medals in all three team events, winning gold with foil and épée and a silver with sabre. He finished sixth individually in both foil and sabre. At the 1957 Maccabiah Games, Krieger won gold in individual sabre and bronze in individual foil. He received the Detroit Sports Guild Outstanding Athlete Award in 1951, was elected to the Michigan Amateur Sports Hall of Fame in 1974, the Wayne State University Hall of Fame in 1976, and the Michigan Jewish Hall of Fame in 1986. Krieger tragically died at age 95 when he was lighting a candle and the match caught his sweater in fire. The fire jumped to a nearby curtain, engulfing him in the flames.
