Paul Makler competed for Salle Csiszar, helping them win an Amateur Fencers League of America (AFLA) team épée title in 1956. In 1955 Makler was on the US Pan American foil team that won a silver medal. He later became an administrator with US Fencing. Two of his sons, Todd Makler and Brooke Makler, also fenced at the Olympics, Todd in 1972 and Brooke in 1976.
Makler attended William and Mary College, the University of Pennsylvania, and Penn Medical School, graduating as a physician, and later practiced internal medicine for many years. After he retired he turned to his passion, art, and served as an art curator at the University of Pennsylvania. He and his wife also ran an art gallery. Makler later studied the classics and taught Greek and Latin at a Quaker school in a Philadelphia suburb.
