Todd Makler grew up in suburban Philadelphia, where he attended the Friends Central School, and then the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1968. His father, Paul Makler, Sr., fenced for the United States at the 1952 Olympics, and his brother, Brooke Makler, fenced at the 1976 Olympics. Todd Makler represented Salle Csiszar and twice was NCAA sabre champion. He earned a medical degree from Pennsylvania in 1972, competing in the Olympics and training while pursuing his medical studies. Makler later practiced radiology in Philadelphia.
