John MacLaughlin graduated from Harvard in 1911, and one year later fenced at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. MacLaughlin also played second base on the Harvard baseball team. In World War I he was a captain in Company I, with the 374th Infantry. MacLaughlin later went into sales and also lived in Puerto Rico briefly.
