Mike Perry was a US native who graduated from Siena College. He started coaching with Ulster County Community College but in1973 was named the Swedish national team coach. He coached around the world, developing basketball programs in France, Saudi Arabia, and West Germany, in addition to Sweden. Perry then returned to the US where he coached Marist College, helping Rik Smits make it to the NBA.
In the 1980s Perry turned to another sport, horse racing. He became a harness horse owner and joined the US Trotting Association in 1982. He was also a member of the Florida Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association and became a national director of the US Harness Writers’ Association. In the later 1980s and 1990s he was a coordinator for the Team Nordin Racing Stable. Perry eventually entered another field, serving as a diamond pearl executive in South Florida for Tahitian Noni Juice, a dietary supplement.
