Higinio Vélez managed the Cuban baseball team to a gold medal at the 2004 Athina Olympics. He also led them to victories at the 2003 and 2005 World Cups, and the World Baseball Classic. He graduated from the Manuel Fajardo University of Physical Culture and Sports Sciences (UCCFD) and the Higher School of Physical Education (ESEF). Vélez became president of the Cuban Baseball Federation. In 2021 he became a victim of the coronavirus.
