José María Alonso was the brother of Manuel Alonso, who was far better known as a tennis player. The brothers together reached the quarter-finals of the 1924 Wimbledon doubles. He lost in the first round of the singles and mixed at the 1924 Wimbledon. José María also played at Wimbledon in 1922, reaching the second round in both singles and doubles. He played alongside his brother in doubles at the 1920 and 1924 Olympics. José María played Davis Cup in 1924-25, appearing in 4 ties with 2 wins and 2 losses. Alonso was Spanish singles champion in 1912. He played out of the San Sebastián Recreation Club.
