The men’s field was somewhat weak, from an international standpoint. The three top players in the world were Gerald Patterson of Australia and Bill Tilden and Bill Johnston of the United States. Patterson entered but withdrew because of business conflicts. Tilden and Johnston never entered, nor did any American, because the Olympic events were scheduled at the same time as the U.S. Championships at Forest Hills. In that event, Tilden defeated Johnston in the finals in five sets. The gold medalist at Antwerp, Louis Raymond, had no significant international record outside of his Olympic title. The Olympics was his first major title but he won the South African championship from 1921-24, and then again in 1930-31.
