Sergio Casal was a Spanish tennis player who played professionally from 1981 to 1995. Casal achieved a career-best doubles ranking of number three in the world in February 1991, and a singles ranking of 31 in the world in November 1985. His greatest success came as a doubles player, winning three Grand Slam titles, and an Olympic silver medal. He was often paired with Emilio Sánchez.
Casal won his first ATP doubles title at the Generali Open in Austria in August 1985 with his partner Emilio Sánchez. Casal went on to win 47 doubles titles during his career, the majority with Sánchez. Casal and Italian Raffaella Reggi won the mixed doubles tournament at the 1986 US Open. Two years later Casal and Sánchez won the doubles tournament at the 1988 US Open, and repeated their success with victory at the 1990 French Open.
Casal competed at two Olympic Games. At the 1988 Seoul Olympics he played in both the singles and doubles tournaments. In the singles he reached the third round where he lost to Michiel Schapers. In the doubles Casal and Sánchez won the silver medal. The pair returned to the Olympics four years later, where they lost in the quarter-finals.
In 2017 Casal was presented with the Philippe Chatrier Award by the International Tennis Federation for his contribution to the sport.
