Miloslav Mečíř

Slovak tennis player Miloslav Mečíř played professionally from 1982 to 1990. Mečíř was ranked world #4 in both singles and doubles during 1988, the same year he won a gold and bronze medal at the Olympics. Mečíř won his first ATP singles title in March 1985 at the Rotterdam Open, beating Jakob Hlasek in straight sets. A year later he won his first ATP doubles title, also in the Netherlands, at the Dutch Open in Hilversum with partner Tomáš Šmíd. Mečíř won a total of 11 singles and 9 doubles titles on the ATP Tour during his career.

At Grand Slams Mečíř was a two-time singles runner-up, finishing second at the 1986 US Open and the 1989 Australian Open, losing both times to Ivan Lendl. In between his two Grand Slam finals he won the 1987 WCT year-end championship finals in Dallas, beating John McEnroe.

Mečíř competed in the singles and doubles at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. In the singles he beat American Tim Mayotte in the final to win the gold medal. In the doubles he partnered Milan Šrejber, with the pair winning bronze after losing to eventual gold medallists Ken Flach and Robert Seguso.
