Biography

Samruay Chaiyong was a Thai football player and coach who represented both Bangkok Bank FC and the national team. In 1956 Chaiyong was selected to compete in the football tournament at the Melbourne Olympics, playing in their 9–0 loss to Great Britain. After the Games the Football Association of Thailand selected him to attend a coaching course in Germany, with him studying at the German Sport University in Cologne. Back in Thailand he then coached Bangkok Bank FC before establishing the Rajvithi Football Club in the late 1960s. Chaiyong continued to work as a coach, in addition to becoming a major-general in the Thai Army and serving as a royal courtier. In the latter role he became a special adviser to the Bureau of the Royal Household. His brother Snong was also a footballer who played at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.
