Wei was born in Beijing and played professionally in China from 1979-82, reaching a high rank of #5 in China, but was never chosen to play internationally for China. In 1983 she retired and went to university.
In 1986 Wei emigrated to the United States, and began playing table tennis again. Over the next 10 years she won multiple tournaments and became a US citizen in June 1993. However, she focused more on coaching than playing. Wei retired from competition after the 1996 Olympics and coached exclusively as her career.
