Biography

Born in Canton, China as Shui-Ling Yip, Lily Hugh-Yip was a US table tennis player at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics. She began playing professionally in China at age 12 before moving to the United States. Hugh-Yip was a four-time US doubles champion, including winning in 2006 alongside her daughter, Judy, who she coached. She also coached her son, Adam, and won the US mixed doubles title with him in 2005, one of her two US mixed doubles crowns.

Hugh-Yip competed at the 1991, 1995, and 2003 Pan American Games, winning six medals with two golds in 1991, in doubles and team. She was inducted into the USA Table Tennis Hall of Fame in 2004.

Hugh-Yip later became a table tennis coach, promoter of the sport, and a tournament director. She coached at the Lily Yip Table Tennis Center in Dunellen, New Jersey, and was USA National Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2010. She served as US national junior team girls’ coach from 2005-11. As a promoter she has conducted multiple tournaments in the New York City area. Yip has served on the USA Table Tennis Board of Directors and is a former Vice-President of USA Table Tennis.
