Kasey Keller was a goalkeeper who played at the University of Portland. He led the team to the NCAA Final Four as a freshman and in 1991 was named the adidas Goalkeeper of the year. While in school he played at the U-20 World Cup, earning the Silver Ball as the second best player in the tournament.
Keller quickly moved up to the USA National Team and was on the team at the 1990 World Cup, although he did not play. He then signed with the English club Millwall and played for them from 1990-96, joining Leicester City at the end of that season.
Keller was with Leicester City through 1999, and then joined the Spanish club Rayo Vallecano, playing there until 2001. He returned to England in 2001, with Tottenham Hotspur, staying there through the 2005 season, although he spent part of 2004 on loan to Southampton. Keller played in Germany next, with Borussia Mönchengladbach, but in 2007 went back to England, this time with Fulham. He ended his career with three seasons in Major League Soccer (MLS), with the Seattle Sounders, retiring after the 2011 season.
Internationally, Keller played at the 1998 World Cup and the 1996 Olympics. He was again on the US Team at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, making Claudio Reyna and him the first two Americans to make four World Cup squads. Keller was US Soccer Athlete of the Year in 1997, 1999, and 2005, and helped the US win the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2002, 2005, and 2007. He was capped 102 times with 53 wins in goal, and was the 10th American to record 100 caps. He also recorded 47 clean sheets during his career, the most famous coming in a 1998 upset victory over Brazil in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, when he had 10 saves, many from point blank range.
Keller was inducted into the US Soccer Hall of Fame in 2015. After his playing career he was an assistant manager for the US U-20 team, and also coached the keepers for the US National Team.
