Biography

Kelly Garrison-Steves competed in gymnastics at the University of Oklahoma, where she was NCAA all-around champion in 1987 and 1988, also on beam and uneven bars in 1988. She scored the first perfect 10 on the beam in NCAA competition. At the 1987 and 1988 Big Eight Conference Championships, Garrison-Steves won all five individual events both years – the all-around and all four apparatus finals.

Garrison-Steves competed on the US National team for eight years, also competing at the 1986 World Cup, in addition to her 1988 Olympic appearance, and competed at the World Championships in 1983, 1985, and 1987. She had a move named after her. The Garrison was a mount onto the beam, which consisted of a round-off to the beat board and a back salto (flip) with a full twist. After her gymnastics career ended, she worked as an entrepreneur, a motivational speaker, choreographer, and gymnastic consultant. She also helped create a Drug Awareness Program, and returned to her alma mater, graduating from Oklahoma in 2013, at age 45.
