Jean Gillou competed in gymnastics at the 1952 and 1956 Olympic Games. He was capped 50 times for France and competed at the European and World Championships. He won two medals at the Mediterranean Games, a team silver in 1955 and a team bronze in 1963.
Gillou started as a physical education instructor in schools but later became head of the sports department in his hometown of Seyne in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. The gymnasium in Seyne, the Baquet Complex, was later named for Gillou.
