Viktor Chukarin led a Soviet sweep in this event as, in fact, the Soviets placed 1-4. Yevgeny Korolkov and Hrant Shahinyan tied for second and the silver medals with fourth going to Mikhail Perlman. The leading non-Soviet was Swiss Sepp Stalder, who had won the 1950 World Championship on pommelled horse. At Melbourne in 1956 Chukarin would add a bronze medal in this event.
