The Soviets effectively had a sweep in this event, led by Hrant Shahinyan’s gold medal. Viktor Chukarin won silver and Dmytro Leonkin tied for the bronze medal with Switzerland’s Hans Eugster, who had won gold on the parallel bars. The 1950 World Champion was Walter Lehmann (SUI), but he did not compete in Helsinki, although he did carry the Swiss flag at the Opening Ceremony in 1952. Shahinyan, an Armenian, won his only individual gold medal in his only Olympic appearance.
