József Szalai started his sports career at MTK. He was a 10-time Hungarian champion in gymnastics and one-time in diving. Szalai competed at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics in individual all-around gymnastics, and he returned to the Olympics in Amsterdam 16 years later. In 1928 he competed for the Vívó és Atlétikai Klub. After his sports career he became a member of the National Sports Committee, a member of the Hungarian Gymnastics Federation, and a member of the Hungarian Olympic Committee.
