Italy had won the last three gold medals in the team event and would win again in 1932. But in 1928 they finished only sixth as Switzerland, who had been third in 1924, won the gold medal. This was a close contest in which they prevailed by only a few points over Czechoslovakia, with Yugoslavia a distant third.
