Lajos Tóth was a gymnast with Debreceni Torna Egylet (TE) from 1929, before joining Debreceni Postás in 1948. Tóth won the individual all-around national championship title three times (1935, 1937, 1939). Between 1934 and 1948, he won 22 different individual championships in Hungary, and from 1934-52 he earned 33 caps.
During this time, Tóth competed at three Olympics. With the Hungarian team he finished seventh in 1936, third in 1948, and sixth in 1952. In 1934 he was a member of the fifth-place team at the World Championships, finishing fifth on the floor exercise and sixth in the vault. In 1935 he won the Universiade with the team and finished second in the individual all-around.
From 1942 Tóth was an intern at the Hajdúszoboszló Tax Office, then returned to Debrecen, where he worked as a general re-settlement advisor. In 1948 he was general-secretary of Debreceni Postás, while from 1948-50 he was honorary chairman of Hajdú County and the Debrecen City Sports Committee. From 1952 he was head coach of Debreceni Postás, then the president of the Hajdú-Bihar County Gymnastics Association. He retired as head of the Debrecen City Tax Office.
