Biography

Jerzy Jokiel had a lengthy career as a gymnast, representing the Pogoń Nowy Bytom club in southern Poland from 1947 until 1972. As an all-round gymnast Jokiel won 15 national titles from 1954 to 1960 across multiple disciplines including the parallel bars, vault, rings, and the horizontal bar. In 1952 he was selected to represent Poland at the Helsinki Games where he won silver in the floor exercise along with Tadao Uesako of Japan, with both athletes scoring 19.15 points. Jokiel competed in several other disciplines at the Games, including finishing 13th in the all-round team event.

Throughout the decade Jokiel competed at several editions of the World Championships before making a return to the Olympics for the 1960 Games in Roma. He once again had his best individual performance in the floor exercise, but this time he could only tie for 10th place with two other gymnasts.

Jokiel was married to fellow gymnast Dorota Horzonek, who won bronze in the team portable apparatus event at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. After retiring they took up coaching, with him working as the coach of the Mexican Olympic gymnastics team in 1967 and 1968. The couple later moved to Spain where they worked in a gymnastics club in Barcelona, before settling in Germany in the early 1980s. Their daughter Anita competed in gymnastics at the 1980 Moskva Olympics.
