Born in New York to German parents, Emil Beyer represented the New York Turnverein at the 1904 Olympics and helped them win a silver medal. Beyer entered the United States Military Academy in 1897, with the class of 1901, but never graduated. He lived most of his life in Brooklyn, where he eventually ran a drugstore.
