There were 13 teams entered, with gymnasts from three nations, but in actuality, all 13 teams were from American turnvereins. They represented 10 American cities, with two from St. Louis and three from Chicago. Each team consisted of six gymnasts with their scores from the Individual All-Around, Apparatus Work and Field Sports event added together to determine the team placements, although there were some adjustments because of pre-determined maxima for each phase. First place went to the Philadelphia Turngemeinde which was led by Austrian Julius Lenhart, who had won the individual event and actually only lived in Philadelphia for a few years before returning to Austria. Germany tried to enter a team but were rebuffed, as not all the German turners were members of the same club.
