Artie Pitt competed at the University of Iowa, after starting his gym career with the Swiss Turnverein of Union City, New Jersey. Pitt was initially trained by Frank Cumiskey, who was on the US gymnastic team at the 1932, 1936, and 1948 Olympics. Pitt won 15 AAU Championships during his career, including at least one on every apparatus. His AAU titles were as follows: all-around – 1942-44; floor exercises – 1942-45; pommelled horse – 1943; horse vault – 1942; rings – 1938; parallel bars – 1936, 1942-43; and horizontal bar – 1940, 1942-43. Pitt later worked as a sheet metal worker. He was inducted as an inaugural member of the US Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1959.
