From 1968 to 1976 Spanish handballer Javier García represented Atlético de Madrid, with whom he finished as a runner-up in the national league on four occasions. During this time García also played in 63 matches for the Spanish national team, representing the side at the 1972 München Olympics and winning silver at the 1975 Mediterranean Games.
Following his playing career García served as the head coach of the US national team from 1979 until 1987, leading the side at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. This was followed by a stint as the head coach of the Spanish national team, with him also coaching them at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. After a brief return to coaching the US team, García was then appointed as the coach of the Egyptian national team, with him once again coaching a national side at the Olympics when Egypt competed at the 1996 Games in Atlanta. García continued to coach international teams, including Portugal, Spain, and Brazil, before a final stint with the US team from 2012 until his retirement in 2018.
