Amália Sterbinszky began her sports career in 1964 with Debreceni Dózsa. From 1969 Sterbinszky played for FTC, and between 1973 and 1982, she was a member of the Vasas handball team. With Vasas she won 10 Hungarian championships and seven Hungarian Cups. In 1982 no club team in Europe could match their level, and they won the European Champions Cup. She was named Hungary’s Handball Player of the Year three times (1974, 1976, 1977), and was later voted the best Hungarian handball player of the century.
Sterbinszky played 239 matches for the Hungarian national team. She won an Olympic bronze medal in Montreal in 1976, and earned three World Championship bronze medals (1971, 1975, 1978), before winning silver at the World Championship in Budapest in 1982. In 1984 she was selected for the World All-Star Team.
Sterbinszky got married in Denmark where she also ended her playing career. From 1984 onward she coached the Danish senior women’s and junior national teams. Later she worked in massage therapy, acupuncture, and the treatment of cartilage injuries.
In 1986 Sterbinszky was named an “Honorary Champion” of Vasas SC, and in 2006, she received the Golden Ring award.
