Playing for the United Team at the 1992 Olympics, Yury Gavrilov played in all seven games and scored 19 goals. At the 1990 World Championships in Czechoslovakia, he won a silver medal with the USSR national team. Until 1992, he played for SKA (Kyiv), but from 1992-97 he was with various Spanish handball clubs. After 1997 he played for HB Dudelange and HB Käerjeng in Luxembourg. After the end of his career, Gavrilov lived permanently in Luxembourg.
