Randy Dean was an All-State football quarterback in high school in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, and then played quarterback at Northwestern University, graduating in 1977. He and his twin brother, Robert, who was a defensive back at Northwestern, both played handball for the US at the 1976 Olympics. After college, Dean was chosen by the New York Giants in the fifth round of the 1977 NFL Draft. He played for three seasons with the Giants, starting three games, but not playing much at quarterback, as he had one career touchdown pass. In August 1980 Dean was traded to the Green Bay Packers who cut him three weeks later and he retired from football.
After football, Dean worked in business for a few years, and in 1990 founded Keldar, Inc., a small consulting firm. From 1997-2007 he was first director of development, and then the athletic director, at the University School in Milwaukee, a private prep school. He later became executive director of the Pettit National Ice Center in Milwaukee.
