Robert Dean played football, basketball, and ran track in high school in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, and then played defensive back at Northwestern University, graduating in 1977 with a degree in industrial engineering. He also walked on to the basketball team for the Wildcats. He and his twin brother, Randy, who was a quarterback at Northwestern, and then in the NFL with the New York Giants, both played handball with the US national team and at the 1976 Olympics.
Robert Dean earned an MBA from Stanford with a focus on operations. He went into business consulting, working in operating management positions for Hewlett-Packard and Adept Robotics and then moved to Indianapolis where he worked for Eli Lilly. He eventually started his own manufacturing company, Aristo Machines, Inc., a tube forming machinery manufacturer, owning the company and serving as its chief executive.
