Biography

Throughout both his junior and senior career Serbian judoka Slavko Obadov won 20 national titles and four Balkan championships, along with multiple medals at other international tournaments. In his youth Obadov won bronze at the 1968 European Junior Championships, before winning gold one year later. In 1972 he made his first of three appearances at the Olympics, finishing 11th at the München Games. Four years later he became the first Serbian to win an Olympic medal in judo when he took bronze in the middleweight at the Montréal Games. Either side of his Olympic success Obadov also won gold at the Mediterranean Games in 1975 and 1979. Towards the end of his international career he won silver at the 1979 European Championships before competing at his third and final Olympics in 1980.

Obadov was bestowed with multiple honours during his career, including being named the best athlete in Novi Sad on four occasions, two Spartak Awards, and the National Award of the Republic of Serbia. After his retirement spent more than two decades as a coach, including a spell with the Serbian national team. Obadov was also a professor at the Faculty of Sport and Physical Education at the University of Novi Sad, publishing more than 100 scientific papers and multiple textbooks.
