Aside from his Olympic bronze, Georgian Parnaoz Chik’viladze was the European open heavyweight champion in 1965, and took the amateur heavyweight silver medals at the European Championships in 1964, 1965 and 1966. In 1964 he also was European champion in the team event. As the first Soviet championships in judo where held in 1973, Chik’viladze never won a domestic title. He died in a car accident in Moscow just a month after the 1966 European Championships.
