Besides his Olympic bronze medal, Lauri Vikko won silvers in the individual and team events at the 1949 and 1951 World Championships and team silver and individual bronze at the 1950 World Championships. Vilkko was also Finnish champion in 1951-52 and took silver at the 1949 Finnish Championships. He was also named as the best Finnish modern pentathlete of the year four times in a row (1948-51). By profession Vilkko was a soldier, retiring from the force in 1985 with the rank of Colonel.
