Guy Troy enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in 1942 and was then selected for the US Military Academy in 1943, graduating in 1946. Troy served Cold War assignments in Germany and Austria in the 1950s and in 1959-60 was a military adviser in Iran. Troy competed in modern pentathlon at the 1951 Pan American Games, winning a team gold medal, and the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. He later served as an international judge for modern pentathlon.
Troy expected to be assigned to the Korean War in the early 1950s but instead was assigned to West Point and told to form a national modern pentathlon team. He later commanded an Armored Reconnaissance Unit and served in Vietnam as an intelligence officer with the 25th Infantry Division in 1967-68. Troy retired from the military as a colonel.
