A member of the Australian rowing team in both the 1960 and 1964 Olympics, Vear rowed for Victoria when they won the Interstate Men’s Eight Championship in both 1963 and 1964. He was a member of the Banks Rowing Club for over fifty years, serving as club president between 1999 and 2006 and was chairman of the organizing committee for the Australian national championships on three occasions.
