Rowing brothers Kurt and Gert Watzke were selected for the 1948 London Games to represent Austria in the coxless pairs. They were eliminated in the semi-finals. The previous year they had won the silver medal at the European Championships. In 1944, when Kurt was forced to represent Germany after the “Anschluss” of Austria, he placed second at the German nationals in the single sculls.
