Ismael Carbonell won gold in coxless fours (with Wenceslao Borroto, Hermenegildo Palacio, and the non-Olympian Manuel Blanco) at the 1979 Pan American Games, in the coxed pairs (with Danilo Mora and Enrique Carrillo) at the 1983 Pan American Games, and again in coxless fours (with Arnaldo Rodríguez and the non-Olympians Gilberto Friol and Roberto Torriente) at the 1987 Pan American Games.
