Ramón Puig rowed the four for Cuba at the 1948 London Olympics. One of his crew members was his brother, Manuel Puig. Ramón Puig was born in Santiago de Cuba but his family moved to Spain when he was a child, and later emigrated to Italy. Puig returned to Cuba after World War II, and later fought against the revolution of Fidel Castro.
In October 1960, Puig was captured while searching for weapons, and was condemned to 30 years of hard labor in various Cuban prisons, including La Cabaña, Isla de Pinos, El Príncipe, Melena del Sur, and Sandino. His brother, Manuel, was later executed for his compliance in assisting US forces during the Bay of Pigs (Bahía de Cochinos) invasion. Ramón Puig eventually was released and escaped to Miami, Florida, where he lived until his death.
