Ibrahim Abdulhalim

By the end of the 1950s, Ibrahim Abdulhalim was considered a rising star in the world of Egyptian rowing, having first competed at the European Championships in 1954. In 1957, he was a member of the crews that won the national coxed fours and eights titles and also attended that year’s European Championships. In 1959, he was captain of the Police Rowing Club and won the national single sculls championship, also representing his country (at the time competing as the United Arab Republic with Syria) in the coxed fours at that year’s European Championships, alongside Abdel Sattar Ibrahim and Abdullah Ali, among others, placing eighth overall.

After winning the single sculls title again in 1960, Abdulhalim’s next stop was the Rome Olympics, where he competed in the eights. There, alongside, Gazi Farag, Abdel Sattar Ibrahim, Mohamed Abdel Sami, Abdel Fattah Abou-Shanab, Taha Hassouba, Saleh Ibrahim, Abbas Khamis, and Abdel Mohsen Isma’il, he was eliminated in the round one repêchage. His promising career ended only three years later, when died in the crash of Swissair Flight 306. Having previously studied at the University of Cairo, by occupation he was a police officer.
