John Hinde was educated at Edgbaston Preparatory School, Malvern College, and then Pembroke College, Cambridge. While Edgbaston and Malvern were not rowing schools, Hinde played cricket at Malvern. After completing his National Service in the Army, however, Hinde went to Cambridge and took up competitive rowing and was a Blue in 1951 and 1952 as cox to the Cambridge eight. He was also a member of the Great Britain crew that won the eights title at the 1951 European Championships at Mâcon, France, and were the last British eight to win an international title prior to the 2000 Olympics.
After winning the 1951 Boat Race, the Cambridge eight went to the United States and made it a memorable year with victories over both Harvard and Yale. Hinde was cox to the Leander eight that won the Grand Challenge Cup at Henley in 1952 and 1953 and, in the former year, he was in the Great Britain boat that finished fourth at the Helsinki Olympics. He appeared in his second Olympics at Melbourne four years later.
Hinde’s father was a barrister for the ministry of Works, and Hinde was at one time a partner in Rashleigh & Co, London solicitors.
