John Jones attended Shrewsbury College before doing his two years National Service with the Royal Artillery. He then went to Cambridge University, and was a member of the Lady Margaret Boat Club that won the Grand Challenge Cup at Henley in 1951. That same year he was a member of the last Great Britain eights to win an international title prior to the 2000 Olympics, when they beat Denmark by just three feet (0,91m) to win the European Championships at Mâcon, France.
Jones rowed in the Boat Race in 1952 and 1953 and was a member of the Great Britain coxless fours that finished fourth at the Helsinki Olympics. Jones later became a stockbroker and was a partner in the firm of Buckmaster & Moore, who were acquired by the Credit Suisse Group in 1987.
